Economic Development Strategy

Introduction
This is the City of Monash's Economic Development Strategy for 2008 to 2012 designed to facilitate investment, business growth and employment opportunities in the municipality.
The key objectives of the Strategy are to:- Retain existing businesses in the City of Monash and assist them to improve their performance and maintain a competitive edge;
- Encourage new investment in the City of Monash;
- Facilitate the start-up of new business ventures;
- Increase the number of local employment opportunities.
Several initiatives have been undertaken over the last three years. Notable among them have been the continuation of the very successful Monash Business Awards Program and the Stage 2 development of the Monash Enterprise Centre.
The success of Monash City Council and its Economic Development Forum in implementing this plan will be dependant on continued networking with, and involvement of various local business interests, as well as strong relationships with neighbouring Councils, other key regional bodies, industry players, education providers and other stakeholders.
Monash Profile
Business and Employment Situation
There are about 12,000 business establishments, including 2,800 home based businesses, in the City of Monash. These businesses provide over 90,000 jobs predominantly for residents in both the municipality and Melbourne’s south-eastern region.
Monash has a good mixture of small and large businesses.
Although most businesses employ less than five people, 280 businesses employ over 50 people. This gives Monash a high average employment to business ratio of almost 8 employees per business.
The City is dominated by the following four employment sectors:- Retail and wholesale trade
- Manufacturing
- Finance, insurance, property and business services
- Education health and community services
Together, these sectors account for 83% of all jobs in the municipality.
