Monash's Economic Position Within Melbourne's South East Region
Monash is a key municipality within the group of 11 local government areas that make up Melbourne's South East Region.
Monash contributes significantly to the region's employment base. It has the largest number of both businesses and jobs of all South Eastern Municipalities. It performs a key role in providing employment to people living in other parts of the region, particularly in the newly established and growing suburbs of the outer south-east.
There is a high level of interdependency between Monash and the other 10 municipalities in the region.
Not only is it an important jobs hub, but Monash also is a major generator of wealth in the region. It has one of the highest export outputs per capita of all municipalities in the region.
It also is the least dependent local government area on government transfer payments to residents, indicating a very high degree of employment and wealth among its residents.
Not least of all, Monash provides a key gateway entrance point to, and a first impression of, the region for people travelling to the South East from other parts of Melbourne along the Monash Freeway. This will be further enhanced with the opening of Eastlink.
