Economic Development Strategy

Future Vision

Support for Business Enterprise Clusters and Transfer of Technology Skills

Context
Monash has developed a reputation as a centre for clusters of "high tech" industries. The Monash Specialised Activity Centre based around the Technology Precinct, contains some of the nation's most prestigious research and development organisations.

Monash University has developed an International Centre for Science Technology and Emerging Industries with access to state-of-the-art research facilities and support infrastructure. The Synchrotron, established in conjunction with this initiative, is designed to revolutionise scientific, research and manufacturing in Victoria.

The Monash Enterprise Centre is one of the most significant business incubators in Melbourne for small enterprising businesses.

The existence of these facilities provides the municipality with a unique opportunity to develop and support "enterprise clusters". This is one of the key aspects of "the Monash difference".

Successful establishment of these clusters also provides a strategic base for training, research and development, and investment promotion efforts. The Technology Capabilities Alignment Project is a key resource in identifying appropriate ways to align a range of Monash businesses with the high tech skills of organisations within the Monash Technology Precinct.

Key Actions
In response to these needs and issues, Council will:
  • Support and promote the developing cluster of "enterprise centres" for leading edge and international IT firms encompassing the Monash Enterprise Centre, Monash University's International Centre for Science Technology and Emerging Industries, and the Monash University business incubator
  • Encourage clusters of 'new economy' manufacturing operations
  • Recognise and continue to support the work of the Monash Enterprise Centre and investigate the feasibility of an extension to provide an innovative and supportive environment for businesses in the trades or related sector of the economy
  • Work in conjunction with other agencies to encourage the transfer of skills in Monash's IT sector to businesses in areas such as manufacturing, health and education so they continually have access to and apply state-of-the-art technology
