Monash Gets State, Federal Government Funding For Manufacturing Project

The City of Monash has received funding of $159,500 under the Australian Government's Regional Partnerships Program to help enhance the competitiveness and innovation of small to medium-sized manufacturing businesses in Melbourne’s south-east.

Other project partners, (including $70,000 from the State Department of Innovation, Industry and Regional Development), have provided a further $194,000. These partners include other Councils in the south-east region, CSIRO and Monash University.

The project aims to promote technology transfer, improve business efficiency and cost saving, enhance business competitiveness and develop innovative new partnerships between business and research.

Monash Mayor Joy Banerji welcomed the funding and said not just Monash but the entire south-east region would benefit from the project. Also, the fact that the project was endorsed and financially supported by many Councils from across central and south-east Melbourne indicated it was regarded as a high priority for the region.

The impetus for this project came from the opportunities that will result from the decision to establish the Australian Synchrotron at Clayton. While it will be relatively easy to convince the scientific community to use these facilities in the course of their research projects, it will be a challenge to engage with small and medium sized enterprises to demonstrate the potential of Synchrotron technologies to their business.
