Fair Trade

Fair Trade is a growing international social movement that ensures that producers in poor countries get a fair deal. This means a fair price for their produce, which improves social, living and working standards.

"Fair Trade Communities" is a new initiative developed by Fair Trade Association of Australia and New Zealand (FTAANZ) in order to provide a generic set of goals promoting fair trade.

Council on 28 October 2008 resolved that the City of Monash becomes a Fair Trade Community, only the second Council in Victoria to adopt this initiative. This means that Council will purchase products from certified Fair Trade businesses. It also involves encouraging businesses in Monash to become part of this initiative and purchase products from these producers.

A Steering Group will be set up to promote Fair Trade to the community and businesses to encourage them to be actively involved.

Expression of Interests will be sought from businesses to join the committee. For further information, please contact Jeff McAlpine on 9518 3454 or jeffm@monash.vic.gov.au
