Mayor's Column

Council has adopted a new Economic Development Strategy for 2008 – 2012. This is to be launched at the next Economic Development Forum Dinner to be held at the Monash Gallery of Art on Wednesday 17 October 2007.

The key objectives of the revised Strategy are to:
  • Retain existing businesses in the City of Monash and assist them to improve their performance and maintain a competitive edge;
  • Encourage new investment in the City of Monash;
  • Facilitate the start-up of new business ventures;
  • Increase the number of local employment opportunities.

Key economic development issues for Monash include further 'globalisation' requiring businesses to achieve world's best practice, greater environmental sustainability, enhanced opportunities for greater export through technology related value adding, increasing reliance on 'intellectual' capital, the growth of service industries, home businesses and electronic commerce, the need for appropriately skilled labour, improved transport infrastructure and the decline in traditional manufacturing with the resultant redevelopment of unused manufacturing sites for appropriate new uses.

The Strategy is designed to reinforce the City of Monash as "First for Business". It focuses directly on issues that have been raised by the business community and will foster the key attributes that make Monash different and stronger as an economic force within Melbourne.
