Monash Update

This year has seen the construction and completion of many projects. The $24.8 million Clayton Community Centre opened in April and demolition has started on the $9.21 million redevelopment of the Oakleigh Pool.

Council has also pledged up to $80,000 in funding to support a Chinese Lantern Festival to be staged in Glen Waverley's Kingsway entertainment and dining precinct on Sunday 8 February 2009. The Chinese Lantern Festival celebrates the end of the Chinese New Year, where people hang decorated lanterns in temples and carry lanterns to an evening parade under the light of the full moon.

The event will include food and trade stalls, stage performances, traditional Chinese arts and crafts, a lion dance, karaoke, a night lantern parade and Chinese dragon dances.

Council has entered a land exchange agreement with VicTrack to assist the development proposal for the Hub Precinct in Glen Waverley. It will allow VicTrack to progress plans to develop a multi-storey, mixed use residential, commercial and retail building next to the Glen Waverley Railway Station. Under the land exchange agreement, Council will relinquish to VicTrack its leasehold interest on VicTrack land immediately east of Glen Waverley Railway Station. In return, Council will gain freehold title to the central Kingsway car park land it currently leases from VicTrack.

The next few months will also be a busy time for retail leading into the Christmas period. Increased activity at our retail outlets places a greater demand on our local industry and suppliers. With this in mind, we wish all our businesses and staff a happy and safe festive season as we look forward to even greater successes in 2009.

Best Wishes from the Economic Development Unit.
