Economic Profile

The City of Monash covers an area of 82 sq km some 20 km south east of the CBD and encompasses the demographic centre of Melbourne.

There are about 172,000 residents in the City, which is in the heart of Melbourne's fastest growing population corridor and strategically placed amongst suburbs with a high concentration of managers and professionals.

The suburbs of Glen Waverley, Mount Waverley, Wheelers Hill, Clayton and Oakleigh are within the City with the commercial areas of Glen Waverley and Oakleigh designated as Regional and Sub-Regional Activity Centres, respectively.

Employment and Industry Statistics

Key employment and industry indicators for the City of Monash show that:
  • There are about 11,500 workplaces employing more than 88,000 people
  • 18.2% of this workforce is in manufacturing; 21.3% in retail and Wholesale; 18% in property and business services and 11.3% in education
  • Monash has an important employment focus within the region providing jobs for 9.7% of the resident workforce in Casey, 9.0% of the resident workforce in Knox and 6.6% of the resident workforce in Greater Dandenong
  • More than 24.3% of Monash residents work in the municipality
  • 38.6% of Monash residents work in a managerial or professional capacity, 26.1% are in the clerical and sales area, while 13.3% are tradespeople
  • 28.5% of the population have a post-secondary qualification with 21.2% having a bachelor degree
  • 39.8% of residents were born overseas in more than 30 countries
  • There are five free-standing shopping centres and six significant strip shopping centres in the municipality
  • An area of about 800 ha is zoned to allow for general and light industrial, business and office type usages.
