Progress of Clayton Community Centre Construction

The Monash City Council is constructing a modern, multi functional, purpose built community facility on the site of the former Clayton Fitness Centre, Cooke Street, Clayton.

This building will replace the local, but currently dislocated Maternal and Child Health Services, Occasional Child Care, Pre School, Youth and Family Services, Library and performing arts spaces. A new 25 metre heated indoor pool with leisure water; gymnasium and program room will also form part of the complex.

Council is also working in partnership with the Sate Government's Department of Human Services to deliver a suite of community health and advisory services, to compliment Council's services, from this location.

Following extensive consultation with community and resident groups, Council announced in February 2002 that it agreed to replace the Clayton Fitness Centre and existing Library/Auditorium with a new Clayton Community Centre.

The development of the Clayton Centre provides the opportunity to develop and extend much needed services to Clayton. In conjunction with this development and through sensitive urban design, social issues and future development of the precinct will be addressed.

Incorporation of existing services within one facility has been demonstrated as a logical and cost effective solution that avoids duplication of numerous common elements, ensuring facilities can be used to capacity. This concept also encourages cross usage and referrals amongst service providers.
