Citizenship Ceremony
Citizenship
Applications
Applications for citizenship are made to the Department of Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs (telephone enquiries 131 880).
Applicants are advised in writing by the Department as to whether their application has been successful or not.
Citizenship ceremonies
Successful applicants are required to attend a citizenship ceremony, as the final phase of their being granted Australian citizenship. At the ceremony, successful applicants are required to pledge their allegiance to Australia and its laws. They are then presented with a Certificate of Australian Citizenship, which formally represents conferral of Australian citizenship.
Under the Citizenship Act 1948, the Council conducts the ceremonies on behalf of the Commonwealth Government, at the Civic Centre, 293 Springvale Road, Glen Waverley, for those candidates who reside within the City of Monash. The ceremony is presided over by the Mayor of the City of Monash.
Ceremonies are usually held every month, depending upon arrangements made by the Council with the Department of Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs.
(Two ceremonies to be held on each date, unless stated otherwise):
- Wednesday 28 February (5.30pm and 8.00pm)
- Wednesday 21 March (5.30pm and 8.00pm)
- Wednesday 11 April
- Wednesday 2 May
- Wednesday 16 May
As these dates may change, please call Council on 9518 3555 for confirmation.
Those applicants who are unable to accept the invitation to attend the ceremony on the nominated date need to contact the Department of Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs (telephone enquiries 131 880) to make alternative arrangements.
Voting by new citizens
Following the conferral of citizenship, new citizens are required to enrol to vote. This enrolment entitles new citizens to vote at Commonwealth, State and Council elections.
It should be noted that voting at Commonwealth, State and Council elections is compulsory and there are fines for failure to do so without a valid excuse.
