Animal Control

Dogs and cats provide great companionship for people of all ages, but owning a pet also involves serious responsibilities. Unrestrained dogs can attack or harass people and other animals. Wandering cats can kill native wildlife and be a nuisance to neighbours.

Dogs

Dogs must be adequately confined to your property with an escape-proof fence and a closed gate. Dog poo is a major contributor to pollution in our waterways and the bay and a potential health hazard when left in parks, on nature strips or other public areas.

Dog owners are to clean up after their dog and, when walking their dog outside their property, need to carry a bag or other means to pick up and to dispose of the droppings.

Council requires dogs to be on leads (no longer than 1.5 metres) in all public places at all times except in the 30 designated 'off lead' areas in the municipality.

Cats

Cats are predatory by nature. When allowed to roam outdoors, particularly at night, they can attack wildlife, particularly birds. It is recommended that cats be locked up from dusk to dawn.

Register Your Pets

Cats and dogs must be registered by three months of age. However as younger pets are most likely to stray, it is suggested that your dog or cat be registered earlier.
