Emergency Management Plan
Major emergencies can affect any community at any time causing injury, death, damage and disruption. The State Government requires every municipality to have an Emergency Management Plan to cope with such events.
This plan sets out the procedures to be followed when Council and Community Resources are required in the case of an emergency.
How To Prepare For Emergencies
- Be sure you know how to safely turn off your gas, electricity and water when told to do so by officials or by official media broadcasts.
- Make sure you have a torch and first aid kit handy. Check them regularly to make sure the batteries are working and the kit is complete.
- Put a transistor radio in a safe place. Check it regularly to make sure the batteries are working. It will help you keep informed if your power goes off.
- Keep a list of emergency service numbers near your phone.
What to Do in an Emergency
- Find out if your neighbours need help, especially if they are elderly, sick or do not speak English.
- Protect pets by ensuring that they can be moved readily if evacuation is necessary.
- Use your phone only for emergency.
- If you are not affected, stay home, leaving the roads clear for emergency vehicles.
Evacuation
Council has established a number of evacuation centres within the municipality. In the event of an emergency you may be instructed to evacuate by a police door-knock in your area, or by radio/TV messages.
You will be advised at the time of the location of the evacuation centre to which you should report.
