Flora in Monash Indigenous Reserve Corridors

Gardiners Creek Corridor

Damper Creek Reserve
Two vegetation communities were recorded:
  • Yellow Box (Eucalyptus melliodora) - Silver-leaf Stringybark (E. cephalocarpa) - Swamp Gum (E. ovata) Grassy Open Forest or Woodland (EVC: Grassy Forest) on slopes of various aspect; and
  • Riparian - Swamp Paperbark (Melaleuca ericifolia) Swamp Scrub Complex (EVC: Swampy Riparian Complex) forming a narrow band in the bed of Damper Creek.

Cheal et al. (1989) mapped the vegetation of this reserve as Dry Sclerophyll Forest Riparian.

Scotchmans Creek Corridor

Valley Reserve
Two vegetation communities were recorded:
  • Messmate (Eucalyptus obliqua) - Narrow-leaf Peppermint (E. radiata) - Silver-leaf Stringybark (E. cephalocarpa) - Swamp Gum (E. ovata) Grassy Forest (EVC: Grassy Forest); and
  • Riparian - Swamp Paperbark (Melaleuca ericifolia) Swamp Scrub Complex (EVC: Swampy Riparian Complex) along the drainage line.

Cheal et al. (1989) mapped the vegetation of this reserve as Sclerophyll Woodland with a strip of Swamp Scrub.

Scotchmans Creek

Vegetation in this reserve is much less intact than in Damper Creek and Valley Reserves. Only small areas of degraded Yellow Box (Eucalypt melliodora) - Swamp Gum (E. ovata) - Narrow-leaf Peppermint (E. radiata) Grassy Forest (EVC: Valley Grassy Forest) remain with small stands of Swamp Paperbark (Melaleuca ericifolia) along the highly modified creek, remnants of the former Riparian - Swamp Paperbark Swamp Scrub Complex (EVC: Swampy Riparian Complex).

Dandenong Creek Corridor

Dandenong Creek
Substantially intact to very highly degraded remnants of five vegetation communities were recorded:
  • Manna Gum (Eucalyptus viminalis) - Swamp Gum (E. ovata) Floodplain Forest (EVC: Riparian Forest);
  • Yarra Gum (Eucalyptus yarraensis) Grassy Forest (EVC: probably best approximates Valley Grassy Forest);
  • Swamp Paperbark (Melaleuca ericifolia) Swamp Scrub or Forest (EVC: Swampy Riparian Complex);
  • Narrow-leaf Peppermint (Eucalyptus radiata) - Grey Scentbark (E. ignorabilis) Heathy / Sedgy Forest (EVC: probably best approximates Shrubby Foothill Forest or a version of Lowland Forest); and
  • Wetland Herbfields (including vegetation of constructed wetlands) (EVC: Wetland Complex).
