Sustainable Lifestyle - Case Study
Damper Creek Food Cooperative:
Damper Creek Cooperative of Ashwood won the 2010 state award for Community Action with their Sustainable Local Organic Produce.
They aim to minimise greenhouse gas contributions, promote a sense of community, support local food producers and local resilience and be socially responsible.
Some of the activities undertaken by the cooperative include an organic vegie box scheme, a produce swap, and the coordination of dry goods distribution with members.
A local farm delivers boxes of freshly picked, seasonal, organic fruit and vegetables on a Saturday morning to co-op members.
Members meet to collect their boxes, share a cuppa, and exchange ideas and experiences about sustainable living. These actions promote fresh and healthy food that is not only cheap but also involves less transport with reduced waste and packaging, whilst building community networks.
