Council is reviewing the current Gambling Policy 2007 because there have been lots of changes in the past four years and more expected in the near future.
Gambling has become a significant health and wellbeing issue which harms up to 1 in 5 Victorians (Gamblers Help Eastern, 2009). This includes people who directly suffer harm from gambling to their partners, families and wider community.
The aim of this consultation is to determine the views of people who live, work, study or visit Monash (regardless if they gamble or not) about gambling, especially pokies and online gambling. The information collected will inform the revised gambling policy. All information collected is anonymous and confidential.
For more information or support please visit www.gamblinghelponline.org.au or call Gamblers Help on 1800 858 858.
Please see below for further information about the process of consultation for the gambling policy review and Council's current role to minimise harm from gambling.
Council's current role
Council works in partnership with the Monash Responsible Gambling Taskforce to address problem gambling in the municipality.
The MRGT partners include Council, Gamblers Help Eastern, community health services and venue managers. Council also participates in regional and state-wide advocacy networks.
In the current Monash Gambling Policy, Council recognises that gambling is a lawful activity that can provide entertainment, recreation and socialising opportunities, however, a small but significant number of people gamble excessively and experience a variety of personal, family and financial problems.
Council’s overall goal and long-term commitment is to identify opportunities to minimise negative health impacts from gambling and maximise the positive ones, both current and potential, on the Monash Community.
