The Flavours of Monash aims to bring residents and communities together through the story telling of settlement in Australia and sharing of traditional food recipes. It celebrates the City's cultural diversity and hopes to raise awareness of the value that new arrivals and our established multicultural communities contribute to the Monash community.
Culturally and Linguistically Diverse community groups were sent invitations by the Mayor of the City of Monash to provide stories of settlement in Australia and to include their favourite heritage food recipe for the creation of the Flavours of Monash. It is our intent to have the site as a vibrant and live record and so we are seeking to have new settlement stories and recipes added by Monash residents.
Residents can submit a settlement story or recipe online by simply clicking on "add a recipe" or "add a story" and completing the form online. If you are adding a settlement story, please provide contact details so that we can confirm that it is an authentic submission.
Please feel free to add a photo of yourself or your recipe (our preference is as a 'jpeg').
In developing the Flavours of Monash site we considered what community languages we could translate the stories and recipes into. While we include Greek, Italian, Mandarin and Cantonese language information on our website (see Other Languages on the City of Monash website) as the four most commonly spoken non-English languages in Monash, it was felt that for the Flavours project that this would act to exclude other non-English languages.
Inspiration has been taken from the Indian experience, where a country with 22 major languages has chosen English as its language for official business. To avoid excluding any particular language or dialect, we have decided to publish this site in English.
