Settlement Story of Bonnie Lo
One and a half years ago, I brought my daughter to Australia for her education. I hope we made the right choice.
During my time here, there have been a number of things that I have had to get used to. First is driving. I'm very scared when I am driving on the road. However, I can't live without a car because public transportation here is not as convenient as in Hong Kong.
Secondly, I did not have so many small insects in my apartment when I lived in Hong Kong. In Australia, there are lots and lots of small insects like spiders, ants and mosquitoes; they can be found everywhere. My daughter and I always scream for help because we're both very scared of them. Also, the smell of rubbish is too unpleasant to be accepted. However, I believe it is impossible to have daily rubbish collection as in Hong Kong.
My family also likes live seafood very much because the taste of live fish is very nice and it is completely different from frozen fish. It is a bit disappointing that I cannot find live salty fish here in the market.
However, there are a lot of attractions here that I appreciate very much. I can have quality water and see blue sky as well as breathe fresh air because Australia does environmental jobs very well. It would be good for everyone in the world to follow their example. Also, Australia is one of the best places that can provide a happy and safe environment for learning. That is why my daughter has changed a lot after being here over a year. She is happier and is gradually improving her confidence and English speaking and writing.
Also, the Australian people are very kind and sincere. They are happy to help others all the time. Once, I took my daughter to a lesson, we got lost so we got out of the car and asked the lady who was walking towards us for help. She was very nice and was very patient in showing us how to go to the correct location.
Fishing is a popular leisure pursuit during the holidays in Australia. My family and I like fishing so we always go fishing when we have time. We had a good experience when we spent a day fishing on the Mornington Peninsula. Also, there are many beautiful and lovely places interstate that I would like to travel to in the near future.
In conclusion, it has been worth taking a risk coming here although we had a very hard time over the first few months. I like Australia because it gives me a feeling of warmth and freedom. I want to enjoy every minute here because I have go back to my own town after my visa expires in the coming years. It is really a happy wonderland that gives me a lot of good memories.
