Settlement Story - Malaysian
I left Malaysia for Melbourne on 11th April 1979 with three young children, one daughter and two sons, aged from 7 years of age through to 12 ½ years of age. We left for Melbourne after my marriage of fourteen years failed.
When we arrived at Melbourne Airport, we were met by Brian and Mary. Brian and Mary were friends that I made when I was young while nursing at R.M.H.
My children were very emotional and fearful when arriving in a strange country. Brian and Mary were very supportive and kind and gave plenty of cuddles to my children. They would always say to us "we love you dearly and will do everything we can to help you all". Today those words still remain close to our hearts.
We lived in East Malvern for three weeks with a retired couple who were so kind to us and refused to take any rent from us. Today their children remain our friends.
We settled in Boyanna Road, Glen Waverley for 22 years. My children attended the local schools. They were very happy, made new friends and encountered many new experiences.
The first 3 months in Australia were the hardest. My children were very homesick, crying just about everyday. The only possession we bought with us to Australia was a piano. We kept ourselves happy by singing together. The neighbours used to call us "The Sound of Music" Family.
I am very grateful that this country has provided us with good education. My children were able to attend University, have good jobs and now own their own homes.
Now I have retired and I have four grandchildren. Our family is still very close and we have dinner together once a week.
