2008 Monash Carols by Candlelight
20th AnniversaryDespite the inclement weather during the day a wonderful crowd arrived to enjoy the clear cool evening at Jells Park for the 20th Monash Carols by Candlelight. Hosted by Pete Smith, well-known TV and radio personality, the Carols featured talented local performers and musicians the entertainment was enjoyed by an enthusiastic crowd of all ages.
Sitting on a blanket on the grass, the new LED screens made every position the best seat in the house. The screens featured a divided view of the stage, Auslan interpreter and the words to the carols that engaged every member of the audience.
The evening came to an exciting conclusion with the arrival of Santa followed by a spectacular fireworks display.

Christmas Decorations at the Civic Centre
Each year in December the City of Monash Civic Centre Foyer gets in the festive spirit with an enormous Christmas Tree!
A group of local ladies from the Probus Club of Glen Waverley participate in this annual tradition by adorning the tree with decorations they have made.
Residents who visit the Civic Centre and Council staff enjoy the atmosphere the tree creates during the festive season.
Australia Day 2009
2009 Australia Day was celebrated with a Flag Raising Ceremony at the Civic Centre hosted by the City of Monash and seven other events hosted by the community across the City.
At the flag raising ceremony, the Victoria Police Academy officially presented the flag to 2008 Sir John Monash Award recipient, Helen Gobbi who raised the flag. The Oakleigh City Band proudly played the national anthem and were accompanied by guest singer, Candice Taylor, as the Flag was raised.
The Mayor of the City of Monash, Paul Klisaris, welcomed attendees to the official proceedings for the day. Bill Nicholson from the Wurundjeri Council presented a Welcome to Country. The Australia Day Ambassador for the City of Monash, John Cain, shared his thoughts on being Australia. Peter Knight from Glen Waverley Safeway, who sponsors the Australia Day Ambassador program, also provided insights into how Safeways supports Australia Day.
All attendees were welcomed inside by songs from the Monash Chorale to enjoy an Australia Day Breakfast.

Chinese New Year & Lantern Festival
The inaugural Chinese New Year & Lantern Festival at Glen Waverley attracted record number of festival goers on Sunday, 8 February with an estimated 25,000 to 30,000 people enjoying the celebrations.
Thank you to everyone who worked very hard in the delivery of the festival to manage this increase in numbers. It was a very successful event with no reported major incidents.
Monash City Council contributed $80,000 to the festival and over 45 City of Monash staff was involved in the planning and delivery of this terrific event.
The festival also provided the opportunity for the community to 'Have Their Say' on the future of Monash at the community engagement tent, which was very popular throughout the day. Residents will again have the chance to say what they think should be the Council's top priorities at the Clayton Festival (22 February), Oakleigh Festival (15 March) and Mulgrave Fun Day (18 April).
The Chinese New Year and Lantern Festival was organised by the Monash Chinese Events Organising Committee Inc (MCEOC), which is chaired by Vincent Chow and includes representatives from the Chinese Association of Victoria, Chinese Performing Arts Development, Hainan Association of Australia, Monash Chinese Friendship Association, Waverley Chinese Senior Club and the Xin Jin Shan Chinese Culture School. In addition to sponsorship from Monash City Council, the event is supported by the Glen Waverley Traders' Association and the Victorian Multicultural Commission.
Wrap up of the 2009 Clayton Community Festival
Over 20,000 people flocked to Clayton Road for the 2009 Clayton Community Festival on Sunday 22 February.
The street came alive with 3 stages of live entertainment, children's amusements and activities, market stalls and a diverse range of food stalls.
Trace Elements wowed the crowd with their Par Kour demonstrations, performing stunts on purpose built scaffolding.
The Youth Zone was extremely popular with local hip hop artists and DJ's and demonstrations of Freestyle Football.
A carnival atmosphere erupted when the headline act Tumbarumba took to the main stage with their afro - Brazilian flavour, the audience couldn't help but move to the beat!

Oakleigh Community Festival
Despite the wet weather and the festival having to be cancelled at 4pm, approximately 5000 people attended over the day to enjoy the festivities.
The Festival featured three stages of live entertainment - Cultural Stage, Bandstand Band Blast and Coles Oakleigh Flavours of Monash cooking demonstration stage.
The festival also included the Snapfest!09 Monash Gallery of Art project and a Footy Zone organised by the AFL Multicultural Officer with the Richmond AFL Club and supported by local and district football clubs.
The festival also featured roving performers, free children's activities and rides, community information, food and market stalls.
Wrap up of the 2009 Mulgrave Fun Day
The Mulgrave Fun Day was held on Saturday 18 April 2009 at Wellington Reserve, Mulgrave. 2,000 people came to join in the fun at the Wellington Reserve Community Centre and surrounds and enjoyed children's entertainment and activities.
Red Mo the Pirate hosted the main stage and favourites like Paul Jamieson were extremely popular and local acts Bethany Fisher and Have2Dance impressed the audience.
