Focus on Oakleigh Ward

Cr Gerry Kottek

In the six months I have had the privilege to represent Oakleigh Ward, I never cease to be amazed at the levels of diversity, passion and enthusiasm of our community. The amount of positive development is heartening to see.

Both the Clayton Community Centre development and the Australian Synchrotron will provide major boosts to our community. The Australian Synchrotron is a fascinating project, which will provide academics, researchers and technologists with a facility in which to advance our knowledge. Synchrotron technology has been used in a range of applications from improving chocolate to bio-medical breakthroughs. I would recommend everyone take the opportunity to visit the Synchrotron display at the Science Centre, Monash University.

The budget process is now complete with the commitment to deliver a number of very important projects over the next four years, including a continuation of work within Oakleigh ward to ensure our community assets are maintained and enhanced.

One of my major focuses over the last six months has been public transport. As the Monash Council representative on the Eastern Region Integrated Transport Group, I have actively pursued the issues of improving public transport to Monash.
Through this group our need to have more public transport (train, bus) have been addressed. Results include a commitment from the State Government to increase the number of Smart buses servicing Monash, improving bus timetables from both frequency and hours of operation perspectives, and a commitment to add an additional train line between Caulfield & Springvale. The effects of these initiatives are numerous and include:
  1. reduce the number of cars on our roads, which will have both safety and environmental benefits;
  2. greater access to public transport; and
  3. more reliable public transport.

These are benefits to all residents of Monash, as well as industrial, commercial and retail businesses who choose to operate in Monash.

Another initiative I am pleased to see is the availability of free anti-graffiti kits. These kits will allow our community to remove 'tags' and other markings, which are a blight on our local environment. I encourage you all to take up this offer if graffiti strikes, and assist us in ridding our community of this menace.
