Clayton Festival Bigger and Better in 2006
The 2006 Clayton Community Festival, to take place on Sunday 26th February, from 12noon to 6pm, promises to be bigger and better than ever.
The vibrant street festival, located on Clayton Road between Centre Road and the railway line, kicks off at noon with live music, roving street artists, and stallholders lining the road in an array of festive colour and activity.
Free activities include jumping castles, carousels, sumo wrestling, animal farm, cup and saucer ride, rock climbing, abseiling and interactive arts for all ages.
At 2.00pm the Clayton Festival Commonwealth Games Parade will proceed down the length of Clayton Road. Keep an eye out for the Monash ex-Olympians, giant puppets, and cultural performers lead by the Royal African Drummers . Don't Waste Clayton! a combined initiative with the City of Monash and the Clayton community will be launched on main stage at the conclusion of the parade. The theme for the parade reflects the community's participation in the Commonwealth games and recognition of the cultures of the Commonwealth.
There will be three stage programs providing entertainment for all. The main stage features music from around the world reflecting the cultures of Clayton and the Commonwealth. Performances include Indian and African percussion Mexican and Spanish dancing, and traditional dances from Burma, Greece, the Philippines, Indonesia, India, Africa, Europe and the Cook Islands.
The Community Performance Arena will showcase local community talent including music and dance performances from local schools.
The Youth Stage and Precinct, a supervised drug, alcohol and smoke-free, environment showcases, hip hop, rap and break dancing. The precinct is coordinated by Quiksound Productions, a funded FreeZA and Office for Youth initiative that supports young people to plan, develop and deliver music and cultural events for other young people. The program is facilitated and supervised by Monash Youth and Family Services.
The committee of young people have been busy programming stage performances, coordinating youth-related stalls and activities, and developing skills in site management and planing. Headliners includes hip-hop acts Word of Mouth and Fizard, and other local urban beats.
