New $2.3m Recycling System to Begin Soon
Monash Council's new $2.3 million waste recycling system, introduced to comply with new Worksafe occupational health and safety guidelines, will begin operation in the second half of February.
Council has approved the purchase of 60,000 240-litre bins for every house in the City and 3000 120-litre bins for flats and units. As statutorily required, the decision has been ratified by the Minister for Local Government, Candy Broad.
The new bins are expected to be progressively distributed to all households between February and May. The bins may be used immediately they are delivered and will be collected fortnightly on the same schedule as at present. A calendar indicating collection dates will be provided with each bin.
Monash Mayor Joy Banerji said the new system was a major investment for the City but reflected both the reality of modern living and a strong commitment to recycling among residents.
Residents may keep the existing bins for use around the garden or they can be returned to the Waste Transfer Station at 380 Ferntree Gully Road, Notting Hill, at no charge. Those unable to get to the Waste Transfer Station can arrange to have it collected by ringing the Recycling Hotline on 9518 3222.
The bins, which are differentiated from normal household garbage bins by their distinctive yellow lid, can be used to take all recyclables including bottles, cans, paper and cardboard.
