New Softball Cages For Waverley Women's Sports Centre

Two new batting cages at the Waverley's Women's Sports Centre will lift the profile of the facility to be one of the best in the State by providing a purpose-built, safe training facility for the club and representative teams.

The project was funded by a grant of $12,000 from Sport and Recreation Victoria, $7,000 from Monash Council and $5,000 by the Waverley Softball Association.

The batting cage facilities will address the safety issues surrounding hitting practice into crowded fields. The cages can also now be used for confined space pitching warm up on game days, removing the risk of injury for spectators.

More than 740 members will benefit from the new cages, and Victorian Institute of Sport, U16, U19 and Open Women's State teams will be able to conduct training camps and regular training sessions at the facility.

The project involved the construction of a two-lane softball batting cage, each 17 metres long, 4 metres wide and 3 metres high, and with gravel flooring.

State Government To Match Monash $ For $ At Jordanville Child And Family Hub

Monash Mayor Tom Morrissey has welcomed a State Government pledge to provide $260,000 to expand the existing Jordanville Maternal and Child Health Centre into a child and family hub.

He said work on the project was about to start and would be completed early next year.

"In addition to the funding, Council has agreed to project manage the development and construction of the child and family hub as an in-kind contribution to the project," he said.

"This will provide a major boost for the local community and will ensure ongoing support for some of the most needy in our City."

The State Government pledge was given by Deputy Premier, Mr Thwaites at Amaroo Neighbourhood House during the State election campaign.

He said the funding would also support disadvantaged families with young children. The project had been developed in partnership with local residents as part of the Government's Neighbourhood Renewal project and would offer initiatives to address isolation, keep young people at school through participating in positive recreational activities and offer a range of counselling and support services.

Monash Council has already allocated $260,000 in the 2006/07 budget for the upgrade of the Centre, subject to the provision of State Government funding.
