Games Fish for Monash

Monash Council has been awarded its first choice of the fish from the Commonwealth Games Yarra River spectacular - the Indian representative Meyer's Butterfly Fish.

Monash Mayor Joy Banerji said the choice was made to represent the diversity of the Monash community.

"We now have a permanent reminder of the wonderful spectacle that was the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games," she said.

The Monash Aquatic and Recreation Centre in Waverley Road is considered the most suitable location given the aquatic link and the connection with the Commonwealth Games through the centre being used as a training venue by the Australian swim team.

Monash will employ a structural engineer to recommend on how the sculpture can be suitably displayed. A maintenance plan will also be developed to ensure the fish's minimum four-year life span in accordance with the requirements of the tender process.
