Community Safety Month
October is Community Safety Month and CSM 2006, coordinated by Monash Council, will include a range of events and activities for residents of all ages.
One of the premier annual events is the Children's Week Activities and Annual Walk in the Park at Jells Park, Glen Waverley on 26 October
Another is the Monash Aquatic & Recreation Centre Swim classic and 5km Fun Run and Walk, which includes Life Saving activities for children
The Give it a Go Expo for over 50s was held at the end of September and the 4 Steps for Life initiative dealing with steps to take before an ambulance arrives in an emergency will be held a number of times during October and November.
For further details: Kerry Jansons on 9518 3214.
Other activities include a Wiser Driver Program, the launch of the Chadstone Safe House Program and a Community Safety Survey conducted by Neighbourhood Renewal.
CSM 2006 will again, as in previous years, focus on a major issue for older residents in particular: falls prevention.
Some common reasons for falls or balance problems include:- Environmental hazards: slippery floors, rugs / mats, cluttered spaces and walkways
- Medication: some medications may affect balance and incorrect use may result in unexpected side effects
- Medical conditions: Some may directly affect balance and stability, for example, Parkinson's disease
- Footwear: loose, unsupportive footwear can contribute to a fall
- Fitness: muscle and bone strength assist in keeping us on our feet.
