Council to Set Up Youth Advisory Committee
Monash Council will set up a young persons' advisory committee as part of its commitment to continue to promote a positive image of the City's youth and their achievements.
Membership of the Monash Youth Reference Group - to be capped at 20 member representatives - will be open to those aged 15-25 who live, go to school or work in the City of Monash and young people from a variety of backgrounds, interests and geographical locations across the municipality will be encouraged to participate.
Monash Mayor Joy Banerji said the views of young people were an important consideration during any planning process for Council.
Councillor Charlotte Baines, who has been responsible for bringing the proposal forward to Council, said the advisory committee would have two broad objectives.
"First, it will function as an ongoing panel of young people to provide input into a range of policy and planning frameworks and secondly it would act as a conduit for the positive promotion of young peoples' ideas and achievements," she said.
"Currently young people are consulted in the development of a number of Council documents. The youth committee could provide more significant, timely and meaningful input into the activities of Council beyond Youth and Family Services."
The Terms of Reference for the MYRG proposes 19 committee places be open to young people and one Councillor will provide direct liaison with the Council. Council will also provide an officer to assist with the implementation of the committee, provide input and advice and administrative support and take minutes.
The Group is required to meet at least quarterly and provide an annual report to Council.
