Monash Fleet Costs Being Cut Down to Size

That zippy little hatchback you may have seen around the city bearing the logo of the City of Monash is the outcome of a review of our fleet arrangements to ensure that we continue to meet our objective of maximising fuel efficiency and emission controls.

Monash currently has 57 sedans, 99 light commercials and 34 trucks and we are looking at measures to replace some 6 cylinder light commercials with smaller vehicles.

That vehicle is the Toyota Yaris 3-door hatch which will progressively replace some of the fleet of utility vehicles being used by Monash staff. Council has already taken delivery of five of the vehicles - two for use by parking inspectors, two for use by Depot staff and one by Environmental Health Services - and more will be introduced in coming months.

The basic vehicle is modified by installing a cargo barrier in the rear so that officers can transport small loads. With some other modifications, the vehicle still costs $7,000 less than a utility. And fuel consumption is down 40% from 11.0 litres per 100km to 6.5 litres per 100km.

During June, the Australasian New Car Assessment Program's crash test results ranked the Yaris among the safest in the country, despite its diminutive size.

Council Resolves to Sell Surplus Land

Monash City Council has resolved to sell surplus land at 13-25 Yarram Crescent, Clayton to aged care operator and developer, Innovative Care, for $3.51 million.

Innovative Care, which was chosen through a tender process, is proposing to develop an aged care facility and a child care centre on the 8,600 square metre site.

Mayor Joy Banerji said Council was confident of achieving its goal of providing much needed aged care and child care places in the Clayton area while also providing funds for the development of Council's Clayton Community Centre.

She said Council had chosen to guide development on the surplus land into aged and child care facilities to meet a community shortfall and to complement the community hub that was being created at the community centre.

The land became surplus to requirements as part of the development of the community centre. Funds from the sale will form part of Council's $17.6 million contribution to the $25.7 million community centre project. The State Government has contributed $8.1 million to the project.

The sale of the land is subject to Innovative Care securing a planning permit and Federal Government bed licence allocations prior to settlement.
