New Grandstand For Jack Edwards Reserve

Monash Mayor Joy Banerji, Deputy Mayor Paul Klisaris and the Member for Oakleigh, Ann Barker carried out the ceremonial turning of the sod ceremony for the new grandstand at Jack Edwards Reserve, home of the Oakleigh Cannons Football Club, earlier this month.

Located on the east side of the Edward Street ground, the grandstand will be a steel structure with concrete tiered standing area. There will be adjoining new toilet facilities and first aid room.

The total cost of the project is made up of a Council contribution $200,000 while the Oakleigh Cannons and a State Government Grant will provide $184,500.

Cr Banerji said the grandstand would help turn the Reserve into a marquee ground for Victorian Premier League soccer.

"It is a long overdue facility that will be of benefit to the club and the local community," she said.

Council has also given the Oakleigh Cannons Football Club the opportunity to submit a name for the new grandstand for Council's consideration.

The grandstand is expected to be completed by early 2007 in time for the new competition season.

New Green for Glen Waverley Bowls Club

A $478,000 upgrade to Glen Waverley Bowls Club, including a new synthetic green and relocation of the car park, has added to Monash's reputation for international standard sport and recreation venues.

Officially opening the new facilities, Monash Mayor Joy Banerji said the Club was widely regarded as one of the best in the State and the upgrade would reinforce its pre-eminent position as a top-level competition venue.

"As was demonstrated during the Commonwealth Games with a large number of Games teams choosing to train here, our facilities are second to none and the development of this club is yet another example," she said.

"Clubs like this one play an important role in creating that sense of community and togetherness that is so typical of our city. This project has again demonstrated how the community, local government and state government can work together to provide exceptional facilities for the community."

Glen Waverley Bowls Club raised $150,000 for the upgrade and received a grant of with $50,000 from Sport and Recreation Victoria's Community Facilities Funding Program while Monash Council provided $278,000 to relocate the existing car park.

Also present at the opening were the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Justin Madden, the Member for Mount Waverley, Maxine Morand, the Member for Forest Hill, Kirstie Marshall, the President of the Glen Waverley Bowls Club, Kim Thorburn, and representatives from the State Bowls Associations.

Following the official opening, the VIP guests demonstrated their prowess on the green, with mixed results. Cr Banerji put her bowl right beside the jack but Minister Madden apparently got the bias wrong and ended up on the adjacent rink.
