Dogs in Parks
Council is asking dog owners to be aware of their obligations when walking their animals in off lead reserves, particularly near children's playgrounds and environmentally sensitive parks.
Monash Mayor, Tom Morrissey said there have been a number of incidents recently where dog owners had not adequately controlled their pets. He reminded owners that they are obliged to keep their dog on a lead no longer than 1.5 metres in all public areas, except for 30 designated parks that are marked accordingly.
"Council understands the importance of people being able to exercise their dogs, but there needs to be more awareness on the part of dog owners when walking near playgrounds in off lead reserves," he said.
Cr Morrissey also raised the issue of environmentally sensitive parks where native wildlife is increasingly returning.
"Please be mindful of wildlife even when walking your dog on a lead. This is becoming an issue in densely vegetated reserves, such as Damper Creek, where some owners are allowing their dogs to run off along the path, out of the line of sight. This results in native fauna being killed or scared and the flora trampled on."
Owners must also bring their dog under control if it is within 20 metres of an organised sporting or practice event that is underway, occupied children's playground, organised public meeting and occupied permanent barbecue or picnic area.
Owners of dogs wandering at large in public areas may be subject to an on-the-spot fine of $163.
