Sporting Pavilions Get a 'Green' Upgrade

Monash City Council is leading the way in sustainable architecture and urban design with its award-winning pavilion upgrade program.

Earlier this year, Glen Waverley North Reserve Pavilion took out the Keep Australia Beautiful Victoria Sustainable Cities Award for Environmental Innovation. The $650,000 pavilion was opened in October last year and has set a local government benchmark for energy efficiency and environmental sustainability.

The $475,000 Tally Ho Pavilion at Mount Waverley is nearing completion and will be open for the summer cricket season. Home to the Monash Cricket Club and Waverley Blues Football Club, the new Council funded facility will include a 60-seat capacity social club and function space. The original building fabric has been totally recycled.

The next project earmarked under the pavilion program is the Wilkinson Pavilion at Warrawee Park, Oakleigh. Tenders for the estimated $950,000 redevelopment of the Oakleigh Chargers Clubhouse have closed and Council will announce the successful bid shortly.

Manager of Urban Design and Architecture, Charles Nilsen, said the VFL had made a $270,000 capital contribution on behalf of the Chargers and would spend a further $30,000 on the fit-out of the new pavilion.

"This will replace the existing building with an 80-seat multi-purpose function room, administration offices, gym, change room, player amenities, umpire facilities and public toilets," he said.

Mr Nilsen said the building would also feature automated high-level (and some lower level) windows to allow natural ventilation and cooling whenever possible. He described the design as "a further development of the environmentally sustainable design solutions developed in previous buildings such as the Glen Waverley North Pavilion."

"We try to design buildings to be healthy, comfortable and an enjoyable experience using simple but sound environmentally friendly elements such as waterless urinals, water-saving shower heads, rainwater harvesting for use in toilet flushing, shading of summer sun, passive use of natural light and ventilation to maximise energy efficiency, movement activated and energy efficient lighting, effective insulation and the incorporation of recycled materials," he said.

The Wilkinson pavilion is expected to be completed in April 2008.
