Bore Water Licence For Monash

Monash City Council has been granted a licence from Southern Rural Water to extract 10 mega litres of bore water per year from the Scammell Reserve Bore in Oakleigh South.

Monash Mayor, Tom Morrissey said the bore water would become the primary source for the Council's tree watering program for 2,500 new trees planted in Monash each year.

"The 15 year licence will significantly expand the availability of alternative water sources, " he said. "The bore supply will be used to water new trees, significant trees and irrigate the nearby sports facilities."

Bore water is ground water which accumulates in shallow aquifers from seepage of rain and rivers through layers of soil and rock. The Scammell Reserve Bore was drilled to a depth of 30 metres. The artesian supply to be extracted under the new licence lies just five metres below the surface.

With extremely low rainfall and water storage levels, water restrictions have been in place since October 2006. Council has adopted a policy of sourcing alternative supplies including stormwater and rainwater harvesting, grey water systems, water recycling and bore water extraction.

"Council has a proactive Water-use Management Strategy. This provides the framework to make the City's use of water more efficient, as well as to adopt the use of alternative water sources for many essential services," Cr Morrissey said.

"It is incumbent on Council to show the way and lead by example at this very difficult time," he said. "We will continue to look at ways in which we can achieve further savings in water usage."
