Monash Recycling Shelter Open For Business
The City of Monash Waste Transfer Station is now able to accept household paint for disposal. Customers can simply place their unwanted paint tins in the bins provided under the newly constructed shelter.
This Household Paint Drop Spot is free for non-commercial quantities. A limit of 20-litres applies.
No other chemicals will be accepted at this facility. Disposal of other chemicals can be arranged by consulting the Sustainability Victoria website www.sustainability.vic.gov.au or Ph 1800 353 233.
- motor oil (fees apply)
- fluorescent tubes (fees apply)
- gas bottles (fees apply)
- car batteries (fees apply)
- alkaline batteries (free)
- mobile phones (free)
All these products are relatively low in toxicity on their own. However they are present in the community in very high quantities so they can have a significant impact on the environment when accumulated in soil, waterways and groundwater.
What happens to these materials?
- The paint is blended with other organic based liquids into an alternate fuel for the cement manufacturing industry. The steel tins are reprocessed in a steel mill
- Gas cylinders have the remaining gas extracted and are then recommissioned for use or scrapped for steel recycling.
- Fluorescent tubes have the powder containing mercury extracted and the mercury is distilled for reuse. Aluminium end caps and the glass are recycled.
- Car batteries have the lead recycled for new products, the plastic is recycled into pot plant holders. The acid is reused or disposed of after being mixed with lime
- Household batteries have the nickel, cadmium and mercury extracted for reuse. In time, further chemicals are expected to be extracted from batteries.
- Motor oil is blended to form other oil-based products such as boiler start-up fuel for electricity generation. The plastic containers are recycled into heating ducts and wheelie bins.
