Building A Better Monash
As the Clayton and Wellington Reserve Community Centres near completion, construction is about to commence on a number of new capital works throughout the City of Monash.
Glen Waverley Netball Centre is also about to receive a $650,000 upgrade, Jordanville Community Centre a $230,000 refurbishment and a new facility built in Burton Street called the Jordanville Neighbourhood Support Centre.
Additionally, at last Tuesday's meeting Council voted to provide further funds to enable construction of the $3.64 million Electra Reserve Community Project at Ashwood.
Monash Mayor, Tom Morrissey, said these major projects are part of the $41.1 million capital works program earmarked in the 2007/08 Budget.
"We have been working closely with a number of organizations, sporting bodies and State Government Departments to coordinate the funding of these projects which will provide much needed and improved facilities for a large cross section of the Monash community," he said.
"These are major investments for Council in financial terms. The contributions by other tiers of government and various user groups have ensured the best outcome for each project, and the community at large."
WILKINSON PAVILION
The new Wilkinson Pavilion, jointly funded by Council and the VFL, replaces the old Oakleigh Chargers Clubhouse, which was in poor condition and structurally flawed.
The new pavilion provides administration facilities, a multi-purpose meeting / seminar room, media room, store rooms, gym, change facilities for fifty players, trainer's room, accessible male and female public toilets and umpire facilities.
GLEN WAVERLEY NETBALL
The $650,000 building works will be equally shared between Council and the Waverley Netball Association to provide improved access between the outdoor and indoor courts of the stadium.
The upgrade will also include the establishment of referees' facilities including a new control room for both indoor and outdoor courts, meeting rooms, improved kiosk and food area, internal access for spectators and patrons, increased storage areas and a lift to provide equitable access to the two levels of the Netball Centre.
ELECTRA RESERVE COMMUNITY PROJECT
At its 29 August meeting last year, Council agreed to provide funding for the development of a multipurpose venue at Electra Reserve, Ashwood.
The Waverley Bridge Club had approached Council with the objective of seeking a site to build its own premises. The Ceres Calisthenics Club had also been seeking a Council facility for many years to consolidate its girls and women's programs.
Monash Council welcomed a grant of $500,000 from Sport and Recreation Victoria, under its Community Facility Funding program, towards the proposed multi-purpose venue.
Council has resolved to provide $2.33 million towards the total project cost with the balance funded by Waverley Bridge Club ($500,000) and Ceres Calisthenics Club ($310,000).
