Holmesglen Valley Bio-Filter Project
Council has joined with Melbourne Water to fund a native landscaped 'rain garden' and wetland in Ashwood Reserve.
Monash Mayor, Tom Morrissey said the Holmesglen Valley Bio-Filter Project was an important initiative in environmental rehabilitation and would create a valuable community asset.
"Apart from the improvement in water quality in the Gardiners Creek system, the wetlands will create a valuable habitat for water birds and animals," he said.
Once completed, the north-facing slopes of Holmesglen Valley will overlook a 3,000 square metre densely planted wetland and rain garden area within which smaller areas of permanent water will be visible.
"The project will also enhance the passive recreation value of the site," Cr Morrissey said.
"This new community asset is designed to be accessible and will contribute to greatly improved community health and well-being with opportunities for people to experience a high quality natural environment in a suburban setting."
Monash City Council will be contributing $125,000 to the total project cost of $180,000.
The tender process will be undertaken during this final calendar year and will involve consultation with the Neighbourhood Renewal Program. Construction is expected to commence in early 2008.
