Flying The Flag

Monash Mayor, Tom Morrissey joined Oakleigh Traders Association representatives to unveil vibrant new Oakleigh Village banner poles.

Fifteen 8-metre high poles were recently installed to display large banner flags funded jointly by Council and the Department of Innovation Industry and Regional Development under the Street Life Program.

The sites chosen for the banner poles are at the intersections of Warrigal and Atherton Roads, Atkinson Street and Atherton Road as well as Hanover and Burlington Streets.

The initiative is part of the Oakleigh Traders Association new strategic directions, under the StreetLife Program, which includes the improved branding of the Oakleigh Village Precinct and the 350 businesses within it.

Cr Morrissey unfurled the eye-catching flags this month with Betty Thuan, President of the Oakleigh Traders Association, and Association Secretary Liz Neubaur.

Cr Morrissey said the StreetLife Project has been successful in achieving positive outcomes as indicated in this example for the Oakleigh Activity Centre. Other initiatives include development of a database of traders to form part of a new website.

"The overall benefits to the broader community include greater exposure and identification of the Centre along with a stronger degree of interaction between the traders themselves," he said.

The banner poles will also be used to display flags for other community activities such as annual public holidays and festivals.
