Planting The Seeds For A Green Future
Monash Council will join the fight against climate change on National Tree Day by planting 10,000 native trees, grasses and groundcovers at Fairway Reserve, Mount Waverley on Sunday, 29 July.
"Planting native trees in Monash is a great way to ensure that adequate habitat is provided for our native wildlife," said Cr Morrissey.
"It's also an important way that we can contribute to the environment and help fight climate change at a community level."
This year, Council bushland staff will set out 10,000 indigenous grasses, groundcovers and trees for volunteers to plant at Fairway Reserve with the aim of revegetating the eastern and western sides of the Stephenson's Road Bridge.
"Planting a tree can help combat global warming, as a single tree can absorb one tonne of carbon dioxide over its lifetime. Native trees provide food and shelter for local wildlife as well as much needed shade and beauty," said Cr Morrissey.
National Tree Day posters are on display in City of Monash reserve notice boards and at Mount Waverley and Glen Waverley Libraries. Fairway Reserve is listed as an official National Tree Day site on the Planet Ark website.
