Historian Wins Monash Award
Historian and author, Helen Gobbi was named the 2008 recipient of the Sir John Monash Community Leadership Award at the annual presentation ceremony last week.
Ms Gobbi has been a member of the Oakleigh and District Historical Society for over ten years and currently serves on the committee as vice president.
She is the author of Taking its Place, a history of Oakleigh and has worked closely with Monash Council on the development of the Pioneer Memorial Park, Cemetery Management Plan, Warrawee Park Management Plan and the Federation Centre.
" Helen is a most worthy recipient of the Sir John Monash Award. She is a generous, humble, intelligent and much valued member of the community who has contributed significantly to many organisations," Cr Klisaris said.
Each June, Monash Council recognises local residents who have given outstanding service to community through dedicated volunteer work.
" Volunteers enable Council to deliver a wide range of social services. These awards are our way to acknowledge the remarkable contributions made by local heroes for the well being of our entire community," Cr Klisaris said.
Frank Jennings was named Volunteer of the Year for his 23-year association with Neighbourhood Watch. Mr Jennings has also been a committee member of Acoustic Neuroma Association of Australasia since 1990, junior coach of Brentwood Football Club and former President of the Junior Social Football Association.
The Young Volunteer Award was bestowed on Miss Rahat Kapur, a Salvation Army volunteer who headed a school charity committee named Project H.E.A.L raising $2500 for East Timorese. Miss Kapur organised a local team of students to participate in the 40 Hour Famine and Earth Hour campaigns, successfully completed the Lions Youth Quest and writes a monthly column in the Monash Journal about teen orientated issues.
" The 2008 Sir John Monash recipients and nominees all share a drive and passion that has enabled them to make a real difference in our city," Cr Klisaris said.
