Child and Family Hub for Jordanville

10 August 2006

A child and family hub is being considered for Burton St, Chadstone, subject to funding by the State Government.

The hub, focussing on early childhood years, would be housed in an extension to the existing Council MCH Centre adjacent to Jordan Reserve.

"This is just the sort of development that this area wants and needs," Monash Mayor Joy Banerji said. "It will provide additional space for the co-location of a range of family services, including family support, parent support and child health services. It is anticipated that local agencies would use the space on a sessional basis."

The proposal, agreed to by Council at its last meeting, follows an approach from the Regional Director of the Department of Human Services regarding the possibility of funds being allocated from the Neighbourhood Renewal Infrastructure Fund for a project in Monash.

This followed a community needs analysis in Ashwood and Chadstone that was completed through the Neighbourhood Renewal Program and resulted in priority for additional community infrastructure being given to the areas of vulnerable families, early years services and employment.

A similar project has been completed at the Craig Family Centre in Ashburton (City of Boroondara).

State Government funding of $286,000 is being sought for the project and a response is expected shortly.

Council agreed to project manage the development and construction of the child and family hub as an in-kind contribution to the project.

A total of $260,000 has already been allocated to upgrade the Centre in Council's 2006-07 budget. This amount and the project management are both recognised as an in-kind contribution to the proposed project.
