Annual Hard Waste and Green Waste Collection

City of Monash residents can soon dispose of unwanted household items and garden waste through Council's annual hard and green waste collection service.

Residents will receive a brochure titled: 'Hard, Green Waste & Metals Collection 2007' approximately two weeks before the allotted collection date for their area. In addition to the actual day of collection, this brochure will highlight the materials that can and cannot be collected.
Residents are requested to not put out items for collection until advised of their collection date.
To ensure your hard rubbish and green waste is suitable for collection, please follow these essential guidelines;
  • Material must be separated into three stacks- hard waste, green waste & metal waste. Residents are responsible to maintain the stacks of waste placed out for collection in a safe manner.
  • Ensure waste material is out before 6am on the Monday of your collection week, as stated in the brochure.
  • All items must be able to be lifted to shoulder height by two people, weigh less than 50kg and be no longer than 1.5 metres in length.
  • Please ensure the material you have for collection is acceptable under one of the three following stack categories:

    HARD WASTE (Stack 1)
    • Carpet/Linoleum - rolled and tied no longer than 1.5 metres in length
    • Fencing in small panels- no longer than 1.5 metres in length
    • China, window glass and mirrors- securely wrapped and marked 'GLASS' or 'CHINA'.
    • Household furniture
    • Mattresses and bed bases
    • Timber - no longer than 1.5 metre in length and less than 50 kg in weight
    • Computer and monitors
    GARDEN WASTE (Stack 2)
    • Tree stumps or roots- able to be lifted by 2 people
    • Tree cuttings & prunings - less than 1.5m (5ft) in length and 150mm (6") in diameter, tied in bundles with string, rope or twine but NOT WIRE and must be able to be lifted by one person
    • Grass clippings, weeds, vines and leaves - placed in open with no soil
    • Single tree limbs - minimum 75mm in diameter, free of branches and leaves, less than 1.5 metres in length and less than 50 kg in weight
    METAL & WHITEGOODS (Stack 3)
    • Scrap metal
    • Motor mowers
    • Baths
    • Empty oil heaters & tanks
    • Empty paint tins- lids MUST be off
    • Spouting- no more than 1.5 metre in length
    • Metal car parts and car panels - no more than 1.5 metre long and 50 kg in weight
    • Hot water systems, metal tools and equipment.
    • White goods and appliances - such as stoves, washing machines, air conditioners & refrigerators (doors must be removed).
RUBBISH NOT ELIGIBLE FOR COLLECTION INCLUDES:
  • Household waste
  • Food & animal waste
  • Decomposing or offensive material
  • Waste from industrial or commercial premises
  • Rubbish from the erection, renovation or demolition of buildings, including bricks, concrete, rubble & excavation material
  • Liquid waste of any kind - paint, oil and chemicals etc
  • Swimming pool chemicals
  • Hazardous & offensive wastes including asbestos
  • Car body parts - in excess of 50kg in weight and/or 1.5 meters in length
  • Vehicle tyres and car batteries
  • Items greater than 1.5m in length & untied green waste prunings

Hard rubbish and garden waste must not be placed out on the nature strip before the allocated collection date.

 A municipality map showing the areas in which collections will be made on a particular week is also located on the back of the 2007 waste calendar and is also available on the City of Monash website at Annual Hard Waste and Bundled Green Waste Collection.

Hard waste, garden waste & metals/whitegoods will be collected separately for recycling at which time harmful gas in refrigerators, air containers, etc. will be drained and disposed of correctly by the contractor as part of the service.

Penalties apply if residents leave waste on the nature strip prior to the date specified on the brochure. Scavenging is an offence under local law and offenders will be prosecuted. Residents are encouraged to report offenders.

If your neighbours have material out for collection and you have not received a brochure, please contact Council to confirm dates.

This service is also applicable to sporting clubs in Monash Council buildings at specified collection points.
