2007 Sir John Monash Community Awards

The recipients of the 2007 Sir John Monash Community Awards were honoured at a presentation ceremony at the Monash Civic Centre on Monday 30 July.
Mayor Tom Morrissey announced Mount Waverley resident, Mr Shashi Kant Kochhar, as the 2007 recipient of The Sir John Monash Community Leadership Award.
Mr Kochhar arrived in Australia from India in 1978 and has volunteered his services to the community and a number of charitable organisations since that time.
"Mr Kochhar has lived in the City of Monash for fifteen years and has always endeavoured to help others, through involvement in community affairs, raising funds for charitable organisations and supporting worthy causes," Cr Morrissey said.
Mr Kochhar is a founding member of the Friends of the Children Foundation, volunteer for the Clean Up Australia Day, the Royal Children's Hospital Good Friday Appeal, Friend's of Scotchman's Creek & Valley Reserve, Special Kids, Planet Ark, Neighbourhood Watch and has been both President and a committee member of the Hindu Society of Victoria.
Lindy Fergeus, a single mother of two and foster carer with Anglicare Victoria, was named the 2007 Volunteer of the Year. Ms Fergeus has fostered over 20 children, sometimes two or three at a time. She has also been involved in voluntary roles with Waverley Hockey Club and Glen Iris Valley Recreation Club for several years.
Other Monash residents nominated for community leadership and volunteer awards were Jack Davis JP, Eileen Kerlin, John Carroll, Brian Gleeson and Stuart Parker.
Councillor Morrissey praised all seven individuals who were nominated for their outstanding service and dedication to the City of Monash and its community.
"These people have all demonstrated many years of selfless caring for others. Thousands of people have benefited from their tireless work and I offer them all my sincere congratulations," Cr Morrissey said.
