Making Monash Safer

21 September 2007

Monash City Council will be promoting Community Safety Month this October to make residents aware of crime prevention, personal safety, safe work practices and procedures during an emergency.

Monash Mayor, Tom Morrissey said the month would highlight how we can all play our part in reducing the incidence of crime, violence and injuries.

"Community Safety Month provides an opportunity for local groups and individuals to take a step towards increasing their safety and the safety of others. A significant number of crimes, violence, emergencies and injuries in our community are preventable," said Cr Morrissey.
Now celebrating its eleventh year, Community Safety Month was initiated by the Victorian Safe Communities Network, which co-ordinates the project with support from the Victorian Department of Justice.

Free events and activities across Monash in October are designed as a 'call to action' for everyone including displays at the Older Person's Expo, Ashwood Chadstone Fun Day and at Walk in the Park on Universal Children's Day.

Councillor Morrissey said that those who attend would benefit from the valuable safety information and expertise that will be readily available.

"Community Safety Month is a great chance for Monash residents to find out how they can make their local community a safer place to live and work," he said.
