Airbourne Headlines Battle Final

3 October 2007

Friday, 19 October 6.30pm-11pm at Brentwood Secondary College, Glen Waverley

Hot on the heels of riding a rollercoaster of success in the United States, Aussie rock band Airbourne will pay homage to their roots by headlining the FreeZa Push Start Regional Finals on Friday, 19 October at Brentwood Secondary College, Glen Waverley.

Just a few years ago, the Warrnambool foursome were finishing school, shearing sheep and playing gigs that cost them money. Today, the former FreeZa Battle of the Bands Champions have signed to a major record label and have toured the world with the likes of the Rolling Stones, Motley Crue, Motorhead, Magic Dirt and Rose Tattoo, to name drop just a few.

Airbourne will headline an event that helped kick start their career, the FreeZa Battle of the Bands regional finals, this year hosted by Monash's Quiksound Productions.

Quiksound Productions is a group of dedicated young people working under the banner of Monash Youth & Family Services. As part of the statewide FreeZA initiative, Quiksound Productions run youth music events within the City of Monash.

The 'Western in the Eastern' battle will see four young bands in competition: Pat and Brendan from Kilsyth, Healesville metal band PHoNIK EMBeR, Ashburton's Charlie Red and local favourites, The Hestons.

Although their namesake has conquered lions, loincloths and legions of Roman swordsmen, The Hestons of Glen Waverley triumphed in their very first battle winning the 007 Showdown heat last July. Lead singer and guitarist, Dane Waters, said that winning their first battle came as a complete shock to The Hestons.

"We'd only been writing original music together for four months and with just three weeks rehearsals with Jason on keys we didn't expect too much. There was a great crowd on the night and a really good vibe. Just being able to play was awesome let alone winning through to the regional finals. We just want to keep on playing and find some time to study for Year 12."

'Western in the Eastern' is sponsored by FreeZa, The Push, APRA/AMCOS, Beat Magazine, Cutting Edge Music, Dex Audio, MYFS, City of Monash, Hot House, Hurley, Jack the Bear's, Cavalier, MP3.COM.AU & Orsino Images.

The Hestons are: Dane Waters (Vocals, Guitar), Rohan Weerasinghe (Bass), Miki Susa (Drums), Jason Akers (Keyboard/Guitar/Backing Vocals).

This is an all ages, fully supervised, smoke, drug and alcohol free event.

Tickets are $12 on the night. Passes for a $2 discount can be obtained from MYFS, 14 Bogong Ave, Glen Waverley or by contacting Brett or Shelley on 9561 7359.
