2008-2012 Monash Economic Development Strategy

19 October 2007

The Mayor of Monash, Cr Tom Morrissey, officially launched the new Economic Development Strategy 2008-2012 at the Economic Development Forum Dinner held at the Monash Gallery of Art on Wednesday 17 October.

Cr. Morrissey said the new four-year strategy outlines the recent developments in Monash and the future vision for economic growth in the municipality.

"The Economic Development Strategy is designed to help encourage investment, business growth and employment opportunities. It reinforces Monash as being First for Business," he said.

Cr Morrissey highlighted some of the key actions in the strategy including the provision of information and support services to business, further education and training, environmental sustainability, research and marketing of new initiatives and investment.

There are about 12,000 business establishments including 2,800 home-based businesses in the City of Monash. These businesses provide over 90,000 jobs predominately for residents in both the municipality and Melbourne's south-eastern region.

"Our share of jobs is the highest of the eleven municipalities in the south-eastern region. Monash is a place where people want to live, work and conduct business," said Cr Morrissey.

The launch dinner was attended by 90 people and featured keynote speaker, Nigel Finney, CEO of the Save Water Alliance Inc. Mr Finney spoke about his not-for-profit association set up by the water corporations to accelerate the voluntary take up of water conservation by the community and business.
