Arts Groups Share in $60,000

1 November 2007

Twenty-nine community groups will share in a record breaking $60,000 funding under the 2008 Monash Community Arts Grants Programs.

Monash City Council encourages arts and cultural activities throughout the municipality and supports local community groups through the grants program, which has increased by $10,000 in the latest round of funding. This year, 31 applications will receive Council assistance for local events, concerts, arts and cultural projects.

Monash Mayor, Tom Morrissey said the grants encourage the City's vision as outlined in the new Monash Arts and Cultural Development Strategy 2007-2010.

"Council recognises that it has an important role to play in fostering and shaping the cultural life of our community," he said.

The Monash Community Arts Grants Program has run for over ten years and the evaluation panel agreed that the standard of this year's applicants was very high.

"Many of the people involved in these organisations are volunteers and they dedicate huge amounts of their own time. They are all highly deserving of these grants."

Cr Morrissey also highlighted a number of cultural facilities that have been developed and upgraded in recent years including Monash Gallery of Art, Wheelers Hill Library and Mount Waverley Library as well as the soon-to-open Clayton Community Centre.

The 2008 Monash Community Arts Grants include:
  • Bengali Literary Society to run an interactive workshop led by an international author and publish a creative works journal by the migrant community.
  • MonashLink to deliver series of weekly creative sessions with an art therapist utilising a variety of art media.
  • The new Notting Hill Neighbourhood House to create a piece of artwork.
  • The Tamil Arts Music and Literature event.
  • Waverley Emergency Adolescent Care for Tandana's Art Project involving workshops for those aged 12-20.
  • Dixon House to create community artwork on the front of the Neighbourhood House.
  • Melbourne Armenian Festival celebrating the Armenian culture through music, food, history, language and entertainment.

The recipients will be presented with their arts grants by Mayor Tom Morrissey at the Monash Civic Centre on 15 November.
