1 November 2007

Monash City Council has allocated grants of $1,517,815 to 146 community organisations to assist in providing a broad range of services throughout the municipality.

The Evaluation Panel received submissions from 167 non-profit organisations, who lodged 250 separate applications for the 2008 funding of community partnerships, new initiatives and small community projects.

The community groups have all demonstrated a capacity to deliver quality services and activities which respond to community needs and further Council's service to its community. The organisations allocated grants provide services for the aged, people with a disability, multicultural communities, children, youth and families or counselling and community support activities.

Grants totalling $709,400 were awarded for community partnerships, operational costs and for the delivery of new and innovative programs. A further 'in kind' contribution of $808,415 was allocated to groups for the rental of Council owned facilities, printing and hall usage costs.

Monash Mayor Tom Morrissey, who chaired the Evaluation Panel, said the purpose of the Community Support Grants was to help develop innovative ideas and projects that create a stronger local community.

"We do this to strengthen the capacity of communities, by involving a wide range of groups to improve social, learning, cultural, employment and economic opportunities and increasing local leadership," he said.
