Flying The Flag For Oakleigh

12 November 2007

Monash Mayor, Tom Morrissey will join representatives of the Oakleigh Traders Association for the unveiling of vibrant new Oakleigh Village banner poles on Wednesday, 14 November.

Fifteen 8-metre high poles have been installed to display large banner flags funded jointly by Council and the Department of Innovation Industry and Regional Development under the Oakleigh Street Life Program.

The sites chosen for the banner poles are at the intersections of Warrigal and Atherton Roads, Atkinson Street and Atherton Road as well as Hanover and Burlington Streets.

The initiative is part of the Oakleigh Trader's Association new strategic directions, which includes the improved branding of the Oakleigh Village Precinct for the 350 businesses within it.

Councillor Morrissey said the banner poles were an example of how the StreetLife Project had achieved positive outcomes for the Oakleigh Activity Centre. Other achievements include the development of a database of traders to form part of a new website.

"The overall benefits to the broader community include greater exposure and identification of the Centre along with a stronger degree of interaction between the traders themselves."

The banner poles will also be used to display flags for other community activities such as annual public holidays and festivals.
