Local Eateries Honoured For Food Excellence

13 November 2007

Monash Council has honoured 66 local premises for food excellence through its annual Golden Plate Awards held last night.

The awards, run as part of Food Safety Week, are aimed at promoting safe food handling and better nutritional choices amongst Monash eateries.

For the second year running, Sodexho at Daimler Chrysler and Ashwood Children's Centre have been named overall winners for their respective categories.

Monash Mayor, Tom Morrissey, presented all winners with a framed certificate and congratulated them on achieving excellence across a number of standards.

"Our eating habits are changing. Australians are becoming more health conscious, and at the same time, increasing numbers of meals are being prepared and consumed away from the home," Cr Morrissey said.

"We provide the Golden Plate Awards to encourage and recognise those food premises that are leading the trend towards better and safer standards of nutrition, hygiene and supportive environments."

The Golden Plate Award assessments complement more than 2,000 food safety inspections conducted by Council's Environmental Health Officers each year.

To be eligible for a Golden Plate Award, food premises must achieve excellence by providing healthy food options, high standards of hygiene and safe food handling, as well as a choice of sun protection, alcohol awareness, business waste and recycling or environmental sustainability.
