Monash City Council has welcomed a $2 million Victorian Government grant for Oakleigh Pool and said it would enable it to deliver a first class aquatic and sporting facility.
"We thank the State Government and the local member, Ann Barker for this funding which will help us tackle operational issues with the Recreation Centre. It will also allow us to improve access by linking bike paths and opening up more public open space surrounding the facility," said Cr Morrissey.
The major capital works will include the refurbishment of the existing diving and 50 metre pools, construction of a new interactive leisure water and spa area, new change room amenities, kiosk, café, landscaped parkland as well as improve accessibility and utilisation of the Oakleigh Recreation Centre.
Cr Morrissey said that the pool redevelopment is currently in the schematic design phase and will now incorporate a number of environmental features.
"Council has appointed external quantity surveyors and mechanical hydraulic engineering consultants who are contributing to technical aspects and cost control. The State Government grant will allow us to make environmental provisions such as the recycling of backwash pool water, harvesting of rainwater off the stadium roof and solar power to boost the heating system," he said.
" I believe the new facility will appeal to all age groups, with families, teenagers and older people all catered for. I would like to thank the local community for the passion they have shown for this project and acknowledge the significant work done by the Oakleigh Recreation Centre Redevelopment Steering Committee."
