Monash Prosecutes Illegal Food Business
19 November 2007
The Dandenong Magistrates Court has imposed a heavy fine on the operator of an illegal food business and issued a warning that, "People die as a result of this sort of food preparation".
Magistrate, Stephen Raleigh said he wished to impose a heavy fine to send a message to others that illegal food preparation in the home and unsanitary commercial food preparation would not be tolerated.
He also noted that, in this case, there was a level of deception by the defendant in that they had been previously warned not to prepare food for sale in their home kitchen.
When Monash Environmental Health Officers visited the defendant's house in July this year they discovered evidence of food being prepared and stored for sale at the domestic premises.
Monash Mayor, Paul Klisaris said that unregistered food businesses should not be operating from residents' homes.
"We will not allow people's lives to be put at risk. There are over 1000 registered food premises operating safely within the City of Monash and we are committed to ensuring that they maintain high food safety standards. We will also be vigilant in tackling people who illegally try to operate businesses outside of the system," said Cr Klisaris.
