Tobacco Retailers Say No To Minors
7 January 2008
Recent test purchasing in the City of Monash has revealed tobacco retailers are increasingly refusing to sell cigarettes to people under the age of 18 years.
Mayor Paul Klisaris said this represented a vast improvement and showed that retailers had heeded the warning that Council will impose tough penalties on those who sell cigarettes to minors.
"The results of the latest round of test purchasing is very encouraging and shows that tobacco retailers are aware of their obligations to the community," said Cr Klisaris.
"Council regularly undertakes test purchasing visits throughout the year. Following last July's disappointing results, we undertook an awareness campaign that appears to have been very successful. I am happy to say that the latest figures place Monash below the State average for tobacco sales to minors," he said.
"The law clearly outlines the importance of checking identification when selling tobacco products and what a manager/proprietor must do to train their staff and agents. This training should occur every six months to ensure that their employees, family members and friends who sell tobacco products are aware of the law," said Cr Klisaris.
